PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THERMALLY TREATED CHERTS FROM SOUTHERN ONTARIO

Conference Paper

Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary results of macroscopic analysis of various cryptocrystalline raw materials from southern Ontario. Individual chert samples, gathered from known chert outcrops as summarized by Eley and Von Bitter (1989), were experimentally burned in hearths for controlled periods of time. Samples were then compared to corresponding control groups for form, colour, transparency, luster, change in hardness, and cleavage. Preliminary results suggest there is sufficient variability in macroscopic characteristics after burning to caution against subjective field indentifications.
