Description:
The University of Toronto Scarborough, the Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Archaeology.  The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Anthropology or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter.  We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing field research in North America (Canada and / or the United States).  Preference may be given to candidates with an interest in developing a vibrant research program including field research based in Ontario.  

The University of Toronto Scarborough is implementing a new Strategic Plan: Strategic Plan: Inspiring Inclusive Excellence. Consistent with the values and objectives in that plan, we especially welcome candidates who self-identify as Indigenous or those who have lived experience in Black or other racialized (persons of colour) communities. This position is part of a cohort of similar faculty searches in Historical and Cultural Studies, the Centre for Critical Development Studies, Political Science, and Psychology. New colleagues will have the opportunity to be connected with previous cohorts of faculty from under-represented groups, including those hired last year in four departments spanning the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.  We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.  The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program in North America.  

The successful candidate must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through past teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application - as well as strong letters of reference.  Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Candidates must have the demonstrated ability and willingness to teach Introductory lecture classes as well as mid and upper-level courses in Archaeology, which may include a course on Cultural Resource Management, as well as courses on method and theory relating to the candidate’s areas of expertise. The successful applicant will also have a demonstrated interest in training both graduate and undergraduate students in field methods.  Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in community engagement and / or collaborative research.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
