Re-thinking Land and Resource Use in the Maritime Provinces for the Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric Periods

Michael Deal

Abstract

Archaeological information on aboriginal resource use and transportation routes for the late prehistoric and early contact periods in the Maritime Provinces is used to re-assess current settlement and subsistence models. Emphasis is placed on the distribution of key resources, including flora, fauna, lithics, clay, and copper. The effects of variable access to specific resources on settlement and subsistence strategies is considered, and a more flexible and dynamic model is presented for the region.
