Community Commons
The Community Commons is a space we are particularly excited about. It will include the space and functionality of the traditional book room for publishers, with new titles for purchase or review, including eBooks. The Community Commons will be a vibrant, welcoming space with increased community and opportunity. We hope you will enjoy a sense of a Mawiomi or Powwow.
The Community Commons will include:
- Complimentary drinks and snacks for conference attendees.
- Artisans and Vendors – Mi’kmaw crafters and businesses will offer their products to conference attendees. Expect beading, basketry, clothing and more. The organizing committee will have a culturally appropriate gift to offer to each registrant. However, we are not doing traditional swag bags as part of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and “green” the conference as much as possible.
- Authors’ readings/demonstrations space – where conference attendees can come to a pre-booked reading by an author or a demonstration, offering attendees another positive, free experience accessible to all
- A book swap area for unwanted books
- Diamond & Platinum Sponsor displays
- Indigenous artwork raffle display and ticket sales (artwork donated by Friends United)
- Silent auction display
- And – a Smudging Space to ensure that cultural & spiritual care and comfort is a constant part of the conference experience offerings for all attendees – archaeologist or not, L’nu’k or not; taking care to welcome everyone to have a positive, healthy and inspiring experience.
CAA 2023 Community Commons News
The 2023 CAA conference will offer a central space called the Community Commons to meet up, grab a beverage or snack, connect with artisans, and browse books and promotional displays.
Attention Authors! Would you like to present your publications at the conference? A dedicated space, the Storytellers Space, will be available at the Community Commons for scheduled readings and discussion. Please contact conference@canadianarchaeology.com for further information or to reserve a space.
