Preliminary Mapping of Comox Bay, B.C. Fish Traps

Nancy A. Greene

Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary results of an ongoing mapping and research project investigating previously unrecorded wood stake intertidal fish weir features at Comox Bay, east Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The features appear to be unique in both size and extent for coastal B.C. involving over 10,000 wood stakes. GIS total station mapping of the complex has allowed detailed recording of stake patterning and distribution in the estuary. Samples are being submitted for dating.
