Archaeology and Pedology at the Smoky Site, Alberta

J.W. Brink

Abstract

This paper deals with several types of analyses undertaken at an archaeological site in the eastern slopes near Grande Cache, Alberta. The aeolian soil is examined in terms of particle size, and rates of deposition and/or erosion as suggested by radiocarbon ages. The methods and results of two experiments are presented: one dealing with paleo-magnetic sampling and analysis; the second with measuring the processes and effects of frost heaving. The applicability of these tests at other sites is discussed.
