The Indigenous Archaeology Collective (IAC) has issued a call to action to the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) in response to its recent comments on the University of California’s draft repatriation policy.
In recent weeks we have seen anti-racism protests across the US, Canada and around the world as people come together to condemn the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Regis Korchinski-Paquet and all victims of police brutality and racist violence. The CAA stands in solidarity with all victims of systemic injustice and calls our members to action.
The CAA endorses the American Sociological Association's statement on review and reappointment processes for faculty under the current circumstances, particularly as many universities and colleges are planning for continued online instruction through the coming academic year.
Heritage Business International has just released its quarterly sentiment survey of heritage office managers in Canada (and the U.S.). These are the first data on the COVID-19 impact on HRM/CRM/environmental compliance … and they are not good. Because of the importance of these data, we are making this report available for free. The attached news release has a code that members can use to obtain a free copy.
We regret to inform you that the CAA Board of Directors, in consultation with the 2020 conference organizing committee, have decided to cancel this year’s meeting in Edmonton. The health and safety of our members is our top priority and we want to help moderate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on Canada’s healthcare system. Our decision to cancel is based on current projections on the spread of the COVID-19 virus and increased travel restrictions from provincial and federal agencies and universities. Yesterday, the Alberta Government asked organizers to cancel any events that have more than 250 attendees.
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canada remains low, but we are monitoring the situation both here and abroad. There are currently no plans to cancel the CAA annual meeting in Edmonton, but should any conference registrant have to cancel their travel plans because of a travel advisory issued by a public health authority or company/organization/institution travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 virus, we will refund their registration fees.
