Abstract

Systematic settlement pattern survey of a 1000 km segment of the mountainous frontier between the Valleys of Oaxaca and Nochixtlan has yielded data on more than 500 sites in the remote area of Oaxaca, Mexico. This paper presents an interpretive summary of the settlement pattern changes in the survey area and relates them to processes of change in the states of the major nuclear zones in the southern highlands.
