Burning Down the House: The Archaeological Manifestation of Fire on Historic Domestic Sites

Dena Doroszenko

Abstract

This paper will examine the manifestation of fire as found archaeologically at four historic domestic sites in Ontario. Each site has experienced a burning episode of varying significance in the property's history. Soil deposition, debris fields, heat alteration of artifacts, fire intensity and types of fire debris will be discussed and analyzed with the intent of developing a paradigm for identifying such deposits.
