Remote Sensing/Geophysics Workshop

This workshop will teach participants the basics behind geophysical/remote sensing techniques and their applications to archaeology. The survey will potentially include the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR), magnetic gradiometry, magnetic susceptibility/conductivity, and drone-based remote sensing (Lidar, Thermal and Optical technology). Participants will receive hands-on training with the equipment at a survey site around Edmonton and will also learn about the history and emerging trends of the sub-field. The survey is also being organized with the collaboration of local Indigenous communities, to focus objectives around their goals.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for Archaeology

This is an extension of the Remote Sensing/Geophysics Workshop, which would be a prerequisite to this session. Participants will be guided through the processing of data collected during the initial workshop, and learn how GPR can be used to locate features such as foundations, voids, unmarked graves and larger artifacts.

Publication Panel

“Publish or perish” is still a common phrase in academia inferring that the number of publications you have can influence your chance of securing an academic job. Publishing a paper can be intimidating, especially if you’ve unfamiliar with the process, and this workshop is aimed at helping this process, especially for early-career researchers and students. Our expert panel is here to answer any questions you have on getting your paper to publication. The panel will include Editors from international and local journals to tell you what they like to see in article submissions, as well as well-published authors to give some tips and tricks on how to write a paper for publication. All are welcome; please bring your lunch.

Student Ethics Bowl

The Student Ethics Bowl is a debate competition in which teams will to the best of their ability to answer questions on ethical case studies in the subject of archaeology. Multiple rounds of cases will be given, and the solution to the problem given by the teams will be judged by a panel. The Ethics Bowl gives a chance for students to practice and learn more about ethics in archaeology and how they are put to use in real situations.  Both undergraduates and graduate students can participate in the Ethics Bowl and can include up to four people in their team. Teams can choose to compete in English, French or both, depending on what language they are most comfortable with.

Flintknapping Workshop

Date/Time: Saturday May 9, 2020 - 1 pm to 4 pm
Location: Macewan University (Room 7-333)
Cost: $10 pp (includes materials) *max 30 participants

Participants will learn about the basics of flintknapping techniques, and will have hands-on opportunities to make (and take home) stone tools, as well as learn about the various types of debitage that result from toolmaking. A variety of raw materials will be used, procured from local and non-local sources.

Archaeological Conservation Field Techniques

This half-day workshop describes the practical aspects of carrying out basic conservation procedures in the field. It provides information on methods used to move fragile artifacts from various burial environments, on the effects of burial, and on packing and protection of artifacts during transit. Both dry and wet or waterlogged artifacts are discussed.

Student Career Forum

This forum offers students a unique opportunity to learn from established archaeologists from various fields, including CRM, museums, conservation, consultation, and academic disciplines.
