Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce the launch of ICOMOS Canada's contribution to updating Canada's Tentative List. Starting in November, ICOMOS Canada will provide guidance on the interpretation of the Outstanding Universal Value and other key concepts for sites interested in submitting their candidacy.

ICOMOS Canada is the Canadian national committee of the International Council on Monuments and on Sites (ICOMOS). We bring together professionals from such disciplines as architecture, archaeology, planning, engineering, anthropology, art history, and geography to discuss and develop the theory and application of best practices to the conservation of buildings, landscapes, and sites. One of our important mandates is to advise UNESCO on cultural heritage matters especially in the context of the World Heritage Convention.

Since 1975, ICOMOS Canada has been at the forefront of the heritage conservation movement in Canada and abroad, actively contributing to the development of the theory and practice of cultural heritage conservation. Today, the organization and its members continue to play a leading role in influencing national and international policies through innovative thinking and holistic approaches to continuously improve the conservation of cultural heritage for communities.

This guidance will consists of personalized discussions between site representatives and two ICOMOS Canada experts with on the ground experience applying the direction included in the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention, the document guiding the preparation of World Heritage nominations. Where possible it will be provided in person, otherwise it will be by video or teleconference.

The guidance is free for participants. For more information please consult our website or contact the secretariat at secretariat@canada.icomos.org

Sincerely,

Christophe Rivet PhD
