After a review of the last twenty years progresses in the study of prehistoric rock paintings conservation, and of the controversial new desert varnish dating techniques, the author comments his explorations of the structure of the red ocher paintings mineral support and seal, by means of various instruments (incident light; microscope, polarizing microscope, SEM) and magnifyings <400x, <1000x, > 1500x), on samples from Lake Wapizagonke, Mauricie National Park.
