If the development of shell midden sites is viewed as a continuum of site formation processes then a significant portion of the shell midden site spectrum has been almost wholly ignored. This paper examines the historical trend of shell midden excavation on the Northwest Coast and discusses some recent examples dealing with the excavation of smaller shell midden sites. If questions of shell midden development and refuse disposal patterns are to be addressed then some attempts for controlling the data are needed. It is suggested that by examining small scale or pocket middens these questions may be more easily answered.</style>
</record></records></xml>
